An automotive system manufacturer was trying to resolve an issue they were having with achieving more precise control over the position of a turbocharger wastegate. Their current solution was a single valve to control both inlet and outlet pressure, which did not offer enough precision and produced too much hysteresis and turbo lag. The new solution needed to be airtight and small enough to fit in a confined space.

TLX worked with the customer to develop a two-valve solution using pneumatic valves with proportional control. One valve proportionally metered the inlet pressure, and one valve metered the outlet pressure. Two valves were chosen because a single multiport valve that provided both inlet and outlet pressure would result in some leakage and less precise control. The valve was small and airtight, provided precise proportional control over the wastegate position, and reduced hysteresis and turbo lag.
